Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet some do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no new data.
