The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
